Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How does it work?
A: RPL Central® is not a Registered Training Organisation and does not issue your qualification. Your qualification is either issued by one of a number of qualifying RTOs upon recommendation, or by the same RTO utilising the RPL Central® system for its own purposes. RPL Central® provide students with an alternative to being forced into one way of doing RPL with one provider. RPL Central provides a facilitator to help you on your way to build an E-Portfolio as a crucial part of the step. RPL Central also engages a qualified assessor to assess you and to give you an 'opinion' of likely outcome. You are not enrolled with an RTO at this point. When you believe you have valid, sufficient, current and authentic evidence and our engaged assessor has validated material and finalised a complete portfolio, you may request enrolment and certification with the RTO. It is at this stage where RPL Central put you in touch with the RTO or TAFE for a free assessment and certification on the evidence presented taking into account the industry experts judgement, but still maintaining the decision. RPL Central aims to make sure you maintain the one contact throughout your whole RPL journey right until the end.

Q: How will I know I'm ready for an assessment?
A: Your dashboard will inform you of how much % you have completed for each unit and qualification. Your facilitator will also check from a procedural basis that you are ready. They will ensure you have at least addressed procedurally all the requirements the future engaged RTO assessor will be looking for. This speeds up the process greatly, and ultimately provides you with a better faster outcome when the RTO makes the judgement based on the evidence.

Q: Once the Assessor comes online and is swapped with my facilitator, how does assessment work?
A: Assessment is performed holistically on all units by the RTO. Prior to that assessment is performed holistically on all units by an industry expert engaged by RPL Central, equivalent to that skilled in an RTO. They will give you an opinion as to their professional judgement. After this, you can ask specific questions relating to the RTO's methodologies when you are provided with their formal documentation. External RTO assessors give you up to 3 chances to readdress gaps in your assessment before deciding an opinion or a decision. They will communicate with you still via the system, and will also communicate with relevant third parties etc. Typically the RTO may only call you if they need, but it is important you recognise that this service is distinct from the RPL Central service, so you are free to communicate with the RTO in relation to training alternatives or anything else. It is RPL Central's aim to have the entire process ready for enrolment and certification combined with an assessor's opinion detailed to the extent that the RTO requires before we make the decision that you are ready to enrol in the RTO for certification, and provision of policies, procedures, enrolment etc. This costs the student nothing extra as you are only with the RTO for a very short time as they decide on the professional assessor's advice, the evidence, and/or that of their own judgment.

Q: What is RPL?
A: RPL stands for Recognition of Prior Learning. This means that if you have developed skills or knowledge as part of your working life, through volunteer work or through previous informal courses, then you may be able to use this experience to gain qualifications. Your 'life skills' contribute towards the specific criteria required for a formal qualification (a Certificate or a Diploma for example). Whereas you would normally have to attend a course at a TAFE or other training organisation, the RPL process allows you to gain recognition by providing evidence that you are already competent in particular skills, or within particular work role: you can get your formal qualification without having to go back to school!

Q: How do I know if I'm eligible for RPL?
A: Everyone is eligible to apply for RPL. However, the question is have you got the evidence to demonstrate competency? You'll need to satisfy the assessor that you are at the same level as required by the Qualification or unit. It doesn't matter when you developed your skills or developed your knowledge, and it doesn't matter how old you are. And there are a great deal of courses available so your skills will match up to at least one of them. If you can supply proof of your competency, then you are able to apply for formal recognition. Take a look at our SkillSearch® feature to see which qualifications your skills may entitle you to.

Q: How much will my application cost?
A: We have set simple pricing for all Certificate levels. We have also created a 15% price beat guarantee. See our simple pricing page for details.

A: How long before it is all approved and lodged with an RTO?
Once RPL Central have formed the view that you have addressed all the criteria of the course and complied with the system requirements to map evidence, and upon your instruction, the kit is transferred over to an RTO for official assessment and certification. The result, it will either come back to us with feedback or the RTO will award you and offer the free enrolment promptly.

Q: What is the AQF?
A: The AQF stands for The Australian Qualifications Framework. It brings together all of Australia's qualifications into one framework which includes all sectors of education and training. It includes the school, vocational education and training (VET), and higher education (university) sectors in Australia. The AQF link their qualifications together into clear 'learning routes' and provide a 'highly visible, quality-assured national system of educational recognition'. The AQF's aim is to promote 'lifelong learning and a seamless and diverse education and training system'. RPL Central® provides you with the tools to acquire an AQF endorsed qualification on the basis of your skills and experience. AQF endorsed qualifications are the 'benchmark' and are recognised by companies and employers throughout Australia. Further information about the Australian Qualifications Framework can be found here. Your skills, experience and prior learning are likely to be acceptable as evidence towards obtaining a formal qualification. Have a look at our SkillSearch® tool to see which qualifications match your life experiences.

Q: What does the term ‘Nationally Accredited' mean?
A: Nationally Accredited means that a qualification is endorsed by the AQF (see above). The AQF are the 'benchmark' for Australian qualifications. So if you have a ‘Nationally Accredited' qualification, it is recognised throughout Australia and in many other countries around the world. Once you complete our process and we connect you with an RTO/TAFE, you will be able to attain this if competent.

Q: How will gaining a nationally recognised qualification help me?
A: When you have a nationally recognised qualification, it is proof that you have undertaken training to be able to perform well at your job. When you are seeking employment, the qualification will be recognised by potential employers and will improve your chances of securing employment in your chosen field. Employers value employees who can show that they are willing to learn and continue to update their skills and qualifications. Through RPL Central® you can use your work and life experience to help you to get a nationally recognised qualification.
Have a look at the SkillSearch® tool to match your skills and experience to a qualification.

Q: Why apply for RPL rather than undertaking a course?
A: To gain a qualification you would normally attend a course at a TAFE or other training organisation. This is time-consuming and expensive and - if you already have a skill - then you will be ‘re-learning' it. The RPL process allows you to gain recognition by providing evidence that you are already competent in a particular skill or work role. Once you've decided that RPL is the way to go you will acknowledge certain benefits:

Financial

  • None of the ongoing fees and costs associated with attending full-time courses
  • No travel costs
  • A ‘set fee' for your qualification with no hidden extras
Time

  • No time spent attending classes or seminars
  • You won't need to go anywhere: so no time spent travelling to class
  • No time spent completing assignments, preparing for class or writing essays
  • There is no pressure to complete your application, so you can complete it whenever suits you: however long that takes.
And, of course, the immeasurable benefits of being better qualified and better equipped for the workplace. To start seeing which qualification your skills will lead you towards, take a look at our SkillSearch® feature.

Q: Why apply through RPL Central® rather than directly through a training organisation?
Training organisations generally specialise in offering quality training programs to their clients. The technical process of RPL can be time consuming, costly and often confusing for both the client and the RTO or TAFE staff. RPL Central offers a web-based service that collates evidence of your skills, and presents it in an innovative cost effective way to your facilitator, and later the RTO or TAFE assessor. It then provides a convenient interface for your RTO assessor to communicate with you. This in turn, usually translates to a lower cost to the student and better compliance for the awarding institute.

Q: What browser or browser settings should I use to access the RPL Wizard®?
We recommend and advise you to use Internet Explorer and always allow session cookies. Our site relies heavily on session cookies to track login activities. If you ever need help with this you can always contact support@rplcentral.com.au and we can help you to enable this feature.
Here is a good Google tutorial on how this can be done: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?&answer=61416

Q: How do I apply for RPL?
A: To enrol and apply through us is simple. Follow the below steps.

  1. Let the SkillSearch® tool suggest qualifications that match your skills or work experience.
  2. View a list of suggested qualifications, employability skills and units.
  3. Add qualifications that match your skills to your ‘RPL Basket'.
  4. Order an E-Portfolio for your chosen RPL Qualifications.
  5. Login to RPL Wizard® to get started straight away!
Q: What information do I need to submit my application?
A: You will be asked for some standard information about yourself, and it will be necessary for you to supply identification for the purposes of authentication. Depending on the type of qualification you are applying for, other specific information will be asked for - you may be asked to provide trade licenses cards or certificates for example. You will then get access to the RPL Wizard® and will be able to begin collecting your evidence and building up the portfolio that will allow you to use your skills and experience to get a formal qualification. Have a look at the SkillSearch® feature to discover which courses your skills may set you up for

Q: What is competency based assessment?
A: Competency based assessment is the process whereby you are assessed as to whether you can provide evidence of the specific skills or knowledge required to meet the criteria for a specific qualification. Definition of competency: Competency is the consistent application of knowledge and skill to the standard of performance required in the workplace. It embodies the ability to transfer and apply skills and knowledge to new situations and environments. RPL Central® enable you to use the 'competencies' that you have developed through your life experiences to achieve formal qualifications. Use our SkillSearch® tool to match your 'competencies' to courses.

Q: Can I submit a hard copy of my evidence through the post?
A: No, the process for gathering evidence for your application at RPL Central® is electronic and simplified. You can scan information onto your computer and upload it directly onto the RPL Wizard®. You can fax us as well and a digital copy is attached to your file.

Q: Is the information I provide private?
A: Yes, between you, your facilitator and your Industry Assessor only. RPL Central® will only supply your information to an Industry Assessor who works for the RTO tor TAFE that will be responsible for your certification.

Q: How long will the process take?
A. Subject to reasonably business hours assessor availability, It really depends on how much time you can dedicate to uploading and describing your evidence to a satisfactory level to the chosen assessor. It may takes the average person 3-4 weeks if they spend from just a few minutes, to an hour each day collating evidence. It really depends on the Qualification, and your life experience.

Q: How long does the RPL entering process take - how long do I have to complete it?
A:
It varies depending on the candidates commitments and number of units. It also depends on the quality of their evidence and commitment to spend some block time. 6 weeks is initially allowed to prepare a kit but is easily extendable for a fee of $75 for an additional 4 weeks. If at the end of the 6 weeks you have not been deemed ready for assessment, this amount is direct debited to your nominated credit card to extend a month to avoid you forfeiting the opportunity. If you wish to discontinue an RPL, you must inform us immediately.

Q: Is there a direct debit dishonour fee if my update transaction declines?
A: To protect your account from expiring, the $75 extra time renewal is defaulted. We charge for every dishonour, and if a charge is dishonoured, a $15 fee will be added to the debt and you will be advised accordingly. If both fees aren't paid within 48 hours, the RPLs account will be suspended and unrecoverable without a new purchase. If  a dishonour fee is declined your entire RPL will be forfeited and unrecoverable. In this event you will need to contact billing@rplcentrsal.com.au.

Q: Should I keep my account financial even if under assessment?

A: Yes, until you are given a competency or non-competency decision your account with RPL Central is mandatory. In this event you will need to contact billing@rplcentral.com.au.

Q: What is the average turnaround time for official assessment?

A: You need to allow yourself at least 30 days for an assessment. In the even you default, you will need to contact billing@rplcentral.com.au.

Q: What happens if I reverse a transaction?

A: If it is for an extension, we immediately reverse its effect and forfeit your account via expiry. After this stage a full reimbursement of the charged back amount will be accepted within 7 days, alongside a $45 chargeback fee (in the case of extensions) and $300 chargeback fee (in the case of enrolments) - otherwise you will have to re-enrol. At our discretion we may choose to recover he debt via the Magistrate's court or any other court of competent jurisdiction. In this event you will need to contact billing@rplcentral.com.au.

Q: I am working in an unrelated field to the course I want to do; does this count?
A: Absolutely, you are able to use skills you have in an unrelated field to gain credit in certain circumstances. You will need to speak to the assessor (after the RPL Wizard component is complete and you have enrolled for free with the RTO or TAFE)  relating to this.

Q: What backup systems does RPL Central®  have?
A: Backup of all data is performed daily. Our equipment is housed within the Equinix data centre located in Mascot, Sydney.
